Much like an 18th birthday or wedding anniversary, retirement is an important and memorable occasion to be celebrated. Your favorite retiree is likely to have more time on his/her hands. They will have time to explore new interests and hobbies, travel, take pictures, add a little luxury into their day, or continue the lifetime task of learning. They might also explore writing their life story or exploring family history. Maybe they are thinking of a warmer climate and planning a move. All these possibilities are rich with retirement gift ideas.

Do they like to keep in shape? A gym membership is a good idea. With locations around the country, Curves is a great gym for the ladies and you can locate local gyms from their home page and they can start with a free week to see if they really like it. For the gentlemen they are almost sure to like Gold’s Gym. They also offer a free week to start. If they like golf you can supplement their supply with some news clubs or other golfing equipment at reasonably good prices at the Golf Warehouse.  Perhaps they like to garden? They are great gift ideas for the amateur gardener like a scooter – with a tractor like seat that swivels 360 degrees with a place for a 5 gal pail and a handle to pull it with when you are not sitting. It’s priced at just under $100.00.  There are many other ideas for gifts for the gardener from Gardeners Supply Company in a wide range of prices. Maybe he or she is looking forward to spending more time outdoors. Help get them outfitted at The Sierra Trading Post with a great selection of outdoor clothing and gear.

Is your retiree looking forward to traveling? GPS systems are a good idea with prices starting under $100. There are portable ones, ones for the car dash, and ones you can carry for outdoors. Screen sizes range from around 4" all the way up to 14". Most GPS and store sites will give you "advice" on how to choose the right one. Digital cameras are quite reasonably priced and much easier to use than you might think. Cameras and all kinds of accessories are available at Kodak starting at low as $80. Don’t forget the photo albums.

If your retiree is not the outdoors type you still have options. How about a course in cooking or baking? You can find a list of such culinary schools by state at CookingSchools.com. You will find lists by degrees, certificates or just workshops along with local contact information. Maybe they would like a course in photography or astronomy that would be available at a local "trades" college. You can call your local colleges for a free brochure of their courses. You can search online for technology colleges by state and local areas.

If you don't know what their plans or interests are you could play it safe with a membership to AARP which has great resources for health, retirement, discounts on everything related to travel and auto insurance. If all else fails try a magazine subscription to Sunset Magazine to help get the creative juices or ideas going for your retiree.
